The Kite Runner
[Disclaimer: This post may have some spoilers. So, please dont read the post until you have read the book or seen the movie. This post was due long time ago...it started when i was still in HK... and m finishing it while in India... so plz dont mind the time related discrepancies]
The Kite Runner is special to me in its own ways… For one, I had been wanting to read this bestseller by Khaled Hosseini for a really long time now. It so happened that I had once nearly picked it up at the Bangalore airport, but then decided to trade it off for The Wonder Years, which also turned out to be a pretty good one! So, when I knew that The Kite Runner was playing in a theatre here in HK, I agreed pronto! The second reason why this movie is special is that this is the first foreign language movie that I have ever seen. The movie is in Dari language with English subtitles and yet that dint even occur to me!!
The movie is about the story of the son of a rich industrialist in Afghanistan. How they have to flee to US when the Russians attack their country. The story revolves around the change of heart of the protagonist, the way he treats his servant (who also turns out to be the illegitimate child of his dad, which he discovers later on). The way he goes back to Afghanistan, to save the child of the servant he treated shabbily, and who remained unflinchingly loyal to him in all regards and in fact, even died saving his ancestral property. The way he gives the child a new home justifies the tag line “There is a way to be good again”
Brilliant story. Brilliant performances. Brilliant movie.
Go watch it

I agree with you, though I couldnt get a chance to watch the movie but I have read the book. I hope the movie is as good as the book..
Uncanny! Just last week I saw a copy of the book on a friend’s desk… had flipped through the first few pages and realised that the book demands emotional and intellectual mind space…
will have to put it on my ‘To read’ list for better times, when I have more time and peace of mind …
@Neelabh: Havent read the book but heard the movie is as good if not better!
@Anamika: Yes it does… I have heard the next book by the author is even better! Have got it… will start reading now
I’ve read the book and really liked it. Can’t wait to watch the movie
Well, as far as I know, the Movie is not as good as the book itself.. I’ve read the book twice and its simply AMAZING..
Thank God I did not read your post before watching the movie! I watched it sometime last week, and then recalled you had written a post on the book earlier, and then dug it up.
You should have had a ’spoiler’ disclaimer rather than the one you have here.
It was the first foreign language movie for me as well, and I’d give 4 stars to it.
And what didn’t occur to you?
@Jayanth: No idea! Havent read the book!
@Ashesh: Thanks so much for that. I have done the needful
An amazing movie indeed!
Don’t know about the movie, the book was Splendid. Couldn’t keep it down.. The second one too…
@Sathish: Yap!!!!
