What you think is healthy may not be so…

Check it out here

Found these items which form part of our daily diet and we think they are healthy, but is that completely true?

Here is the list of 10 items we think are healthy but are NOT!

RaisinsFruit Juices

GheeBrown breadCeaser Salad

Red WinePastaMilk

Calories intake

Fruit Juices: Shocking!!! Aint it? Juices take up very little place in the stomach, leaving you hungry and unsatisfied. They also lack the one important ingredient that whole fruits contain: fibre.

Raisins: Raisins are simply too dense in carbohydrates to be considered a diet food.

Corn Flakes: Lacking a decent amount of fiber, corn flakes fail to fill you up or provide a steady flow of energy. Go for Wheat flakes instead!!!

Ghee: 1 tablespoon of ghee gives you 115 calories! Need i say anything more?

Brown Bread: Not all brown breads are made of whole wheat! Most of them just have color as an ingredient! :O

Pasta: Nearly fat free but has 50 gms of Carbohydrate for every 200 gms of Pasta. Have it with some fibres like broccoli to increase digestion.

Margarine: You may as well have butter! It is high in Saturated fat.

Caesar Salad: A whopping 135 Calories for every 25 gms

Milk: A mere cup (145 grams) of whole milk yields a whopping 150 calories, 8 grams of fat and 35 milligrams of cholesterol.

Wine: 1 gram of alcohol equals 7 calories, making it almost as calorie heavy as fats (1 gram of fat is 9 calories).

Watch what you eat! More importantly, know what you eat!

    A drunkard reads in a news paper that alcohol is bad for health. He stopped reading the newspaper. :P

    Thankfully I’m no drunkard, but I refuse to see the post… lest I fear for my life. :P

    I love fruit juices, cornflakes, raisins, brown bread, pasta, milk and wine. You said ‘know what you eat.’ So now that I know, I can continue eating! ;)

    Fruit Juices: Fruit juices are bad in general. Anything that you don’t have to chew, isn’t worth eating IMO, except for water of course.
    Raisins: May be you’re right but they are a good source of iron and have fiber too, not to mention natural sugar, which is much better compared to the regular processed sugar. I think raisins make a better snack than chips or some other junk food.
    Corn Flakes: But they’re better than other sugary cereals any day. E.g. froot loops, cinnamon toast crunch, lucky charms, etc.
    Ghee: It’s also supposed to have the HDL cholesterol, which helps rid of LDL (bad kind of cholesterol). I wouldn’t skip it altogether.
    Brown Bread: Really? Wow, that’s surprising! Well, here in the US they tell you what the ingredients are of the breads so you can pick and choose what kind you want. They also have quite a lot of multigrain breads that you can pick from. Not sure whether in India we have them too.
    Pasta: I’d skip it altogether, the flour sticks inside your tummy and causes digestion problems, so not worth eating on regular basis. May be once every two weeks.
    Margarine: Yup, skip it is what I’d do to, in fact, I don’t put anything on toast any more, just eat it plain. Requires a lot of chewing but you actually get to taste the delicious bread. (It does take a little getting used to)
    Caesar Salad: Salad with no dressing is what I eat. If you really want to eat the dressing, have the dressing on side in a small cup and dip your fork in it before picking up veggies with the fork. Another good substitute for dressing is fresh lemon juice. Also, important to mention, don’t add salt/sugar to anything while eating.
    Milk: Oh come on! You don’t want to miss out on the calcium, vitamin A and D that come along with those. Specially for girls, don’t skip milk, please! I’d drink it but just make sure I burn off those extra calories/fat on regular basis.
    Wine: Alcohol damages your liver. Need I say more? [let those bricks and bats fly! ;)]

    I agree with Amit, my mother needs to read this! That way I’ll get rid of Milk, Corn Flakes, Fruit Juices and will gorge on Coke, Chipps and Burgers. At least we know they’re not healthy. At least there’ll be no dhokha. :P

    You have discussed the calories and fibre only Nova. How about Calcium in milk or iron in corn flakes? Raisins have lots of nutrients that we require for a healthy life. The difference between Margarine and butter is cholesterol and not fat. For some other reasons, the benefits of margarine are debatable.

    You have to remember, and what most people don’t realize…is that that these foods are “unhealthy” it is that most people consume a huge amount at one sitting. You NEED calories for your body to function properly, you also need a certain amount of fats AND carbs as well as protein.

    What you have to do is not so much watch WHAT you eat (though you should stay away from high fat foods like fast food) but how much you eat of it. It is easy to do this IF you watch your SERVING SIZE and stick to how many servings you are eating. Most people eat 2 times if not more of what they should eat per sitting. If you go out to eat at say, Chili’s, and order an entree…that could very well be your entire caloric intake for a day as the portion sizes are huge…and of course you feel guilty not eating it all because you spent so much on it…so you eat it….even though it is a days worth of protein, carbs, and fats.

    For example…a serving of breakfast cereal is 1 cup with 1 cup of milk. Most people eat at least twice that in one bowl, then maybe even get a second bowl making it 4 times the amount you should eat. The average person should be on a 2000 calorie diet (give or take depending on your needs…like if you are extremely active you may need more, if you are sedentary you could stand a bit less). You want about 45% of your calories to come from carbohydrates that includes fruits and juices, but you want to stay away from simple carbs like what is found in refined pastas and breads.

    Complex carbs (like what is in whole wheat products) are great because, like protein, they take a long time to process and therefore giving you a longer stream of energy instead of eating the refined kind that only give you a quick burst…which makes you want to eat more more more when it wears off, then eating more refined, etc. into a vicious cycle of a carb high and low.

    There really aren’t any “bad” or “unhealthy” foods…just food. It is all in how much you eat. If you stick to your serving sizes (NOT portion sizes) you should be ok.

    @Kanan…the milk you are talking about is extinct nowadays. its mostly mixed with so much water and having harmful concentrations of chemicals due to bioaccumulation. Its better to eat Horlicks

    @Ashish: Lol!! Hahahahha

    @Nita: Lol :)

    @Kanan:

    Fruit Juices: Fruit juices are bad in general. Anything that you don’t have to chew, isn’t worth eating IMO, except for water of course.

    No, I think coconut water is also an exception here.

    Raisins: May be you’re right but they are a good source of iron and have fiber too, not to mention natural sugar, which is much better compared to the regular processed sugar. I think raisins make a better snack than chips or some other junk food.

    Snacks? Absolutely…

    Corn Flakes: But they’re better than other sugary cereals any day. E.g. froot loops, cinnamon toast crunch, lucky charms, etc.

    Yeah when compared to those sugary lumps, absolutely…

    Ghee: It’s also supposed to have the HDL cholesterol, which helps rid of LDL (bad kind of cholesterol). I wouldn’t skip it altogether.

    True, and anything in moderation is all right…

    Brown Bread: Really? Wow, that’s surprising! Well, here in the US they tell you what the ingredients are of the breads so you can pick and choose what kind you want. They also have quite a lot of multigrain breads that you can pick from. Not sure whether in India we have them too.

    Natural brown bread is fine… some are synthetic though, one needs to stay away from that…

    Pasta: I’d skip it altogether, the flour sticks inside your tummy and causes digestion problems, so not worth eating on regular basis. May be once every two weeks.

    Man, I love it :(

    Margarine: Yup, skip it is what I’d do to, in fact, I don’t put anything on toast any more, just eat it plain. Requires a lot of chewing but you actually get to taste the delicious bread. (It does take a little getting used to)

    Yeah… but i still cant get rid of butter :(

    Caesar Salad: Salad with no dressing is what I eat. If you really want to eat the dressing, have the dressing on side in a small cup and dip your fork in it before picking up veggies with the fork. Another good substitute for dressing is fresh lemon juice. Also, important to mention, don’t add salt/sugar to anything while eating.

    Thats a good idea :)

    Milk: Oh come on! You don’t want to miss out on the calcium, vitamin A and D that come along with those. Specially for girls, don’t skip milk, please! I’d drink it but just make sure I burn off those extra calories/fat on regular basis.

    The Calcium thing and the usefulness of milk is still a big question mark…

    Wine: Alcohol damages your liver. Need I say more? [let those bricks and bats fly! ;)]

    Lol ;)

    @Ish: Hahahhaahhahha :)

    @Dr. Tom: Thanks Doc :)

    @Pr3rna: Hmmm.. thats a good input

    @Sandy: A very valid point Sandy.

    @Soham: hehhehhehehhe :) Wahi to maat kha jata hai na India ;)

    @Anshul: U r welcome :)

    @Reema: Very true Reema
