Movie Review: Aamir – Excellent cinema!

Aamir is a low budget movie with only one actor. Yes, the movie revolves around a day of the protagonist played by Rajeev Khandelwal, a famous TV artiste, who is debuting with this movie by Rajkumar Gupta.

The movie does not have big names associated with it. But, it does have a great story line and some great direction.

Aamir is the story of a young and successful doctor who comes back from the UK to India after completing his studies. The moment he steps down from the air-plane, he is surprised to see that no one from his family has come to pick him up. He tries calling his family, no one picks up. Thats the first time he senses something wrong.

And then, he is handed over a phone by two hooded men on the bike. And he starts receiving calls from an unknown person who guides him on what to do next. When he refuses, he is not given an option and the life of his family is at stake.

The whole movie revolves around how he is tortured and used.

The climax of the movie is the best part and keeps you hooked onto your seat. The end is brilliantly done and specially the last scene where the news excerpts all over the media are shown.

I would call the movie a definite eye-opener. It certainly made me rethink on a lot of things, which I would not like to mention here, lest I may reveal some spoilers.

An excellent watch. A must see for all.

Go watch it today :)

  1. I opted for Jannat instead of this film, and I got a nasty headache..Avoid that film at any cost.

  2. Everyone is recommending this movie. Have to watch it now.

  3. Me saw this movie on the TV.. :D
    Ya, the movie was screened on “UTV Movies” channel on Friday the 18th… Even I was shocked to know that this being a new release and so soon it was screened on a TV channel.
    Well, I don’t know whether this channel is available for cable subscribers but is available on Tata Sky. May be those who have Tata Sky would have definitely watched this movie.

    Anyways its a nice movie… I recommend you to watch it.. :)

  4. I cannot agree more. Awesome movie. Dark, relevant yet gripping!

    Aamir is undoubtedly one of the best movies of the year so far in India (Personally, I think it is THE best in 2008 as of now!).

  5. Just today my parents and I saw the movie. Wonderful movie!

  6. aww.. must watch.. some other day maybe.. :D

  7. holy shit! i missed on it…..was watching it on utv on saturday….liked it…..suspense thriller….i really wanted to see the end…..but stdzzz…ufhhhhhhhh :(
    true i think tat despite being a low budget movie without big names….the movie surely captures your attention……and that loo scene gross! i was having dinner at that time and suddenly this scene popped up where the actor puked and it looked so real ……..surely outstanding performance by rajeev khadelwal :)
    by the way what happens at the end????

  8. Yes, indeed a good movie. Short and sweet. Although my Indian bent of mind would have preferred a better end.

    The movie would have been screened on UTV movies so soon because 1) its their own production, and 2) it was a very low-budget film, and was quite popular, so would already have recovered all costs and made profits.

  9. This one also goes to my ‘must see’ list for this week !! :)

  10. @Harshad: Ooo boy! That was a wrong choice :)

    @Amit: Yes u should.

    @Joel: Yeah its quite strange that the movie was sold off so quickly. Or was it pirated?

    @Nik: Absolutely… :)

    @Reema: Wonderful indeed :)

    @Sandeep: :)

    @Arpit: Do you really want me to reveal that? It would kill the suspense. Suggest you to watch it again. you wont regret it :)

    @Ashes: Yep! That makes sense. But, who would not want to keep earning more money out of it, specially since it was a money churner!

    @Xylene: :D

  11. Did n’t like it at all. It raised lot of questions still you can not deny the truth. Moreever Rajiv Khandelwal was never fav of mine. so many reasons not to like it :)

  12. heard a lot of it…. missed it on saturday…. when they screened it at UTV movies… when is the next time that they r screening it on the cable? may be UTV movies again? does anybody know?

  13. @Nova – Yea, its nice!

  14. A very well made movie. But a sad truth is that, it is a down-right rip (read as ‘copy’) of the Filipino movie “Cavite” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0428303/). Too sad that even independent film-makers have started to plagiarise stories and screenplays. All they need to do is open the titles with credits to the original.

    They don’t have the nerve to even acknowledge their “inspiration”. But this movie is far from inspired. It is a scene by scene rip, only set in Mumbai, so credits to locations. I posted a blog on Kamal’s plagiarism of scripts long time back. If interested, do give it a read at http://greycellfiles.blogspot.com/2006/10/so-much-for-co-incidences.html.

  15. In case you are interested, this is the plot summary of “Cavite”:-

    Adam, a security guard, travels from California to the Philippines, his native land, for his father’s funeral. He arrives in Manila. As he waits, a phone rings in his backpack; he answers it, and a male voice tells him that his mother and sister are captives and will be killed if Adam doesn’t cooperate. Over the next hour, the voice sends Adam by bus, taxi, motorized tricycle, and on foot through an urban landscape of busy streets, cramped apartments, a fetid squatters’ camp, a bank, a cockfighting arena, and a church. Adam’s conversations with the voice cover murder, Islam, jihad, rebellion in Mindanao, and his family. What is it Adam will be commanded to do? Will he acquiesce?
