The fantabulous weekend of Formula One (F1) and Dandiya!

The fantabulous weekend of Formula One (F1) and Dandiya!

In continuation with my previous post about the promising weekend, here is a recount of the weekend, which exceeded all the expectations I had set, by a million light years! :)

It all started with Noobie and I going for the F1 on Friday. Those were the special passes (Paddock Club) given out to us, only for that day. It was a special privilege to be amongst the “who’s who” in Singapore. The treatment gives to us was princely! Not to mention that the place where we were sitting was right above the “Pit stop” – It was actually the best possible place to be seated in F1.

Here are some pics… All the pics have been taken from above the pit stop!

And finally the moment we had been waiting for… The Force India car!! It was a delight beyond imagination watching the tricolor painted across the car!! :D

2009_0925_f1_ 082

As soon as the F1 thing was over, I realised I did not have a lot of resilience to LOUD noise!! When these cars zip by next to you, your ears hurt like they never had!! Finally better sense prevailed and I used ear buds to protect the vulnerable duo! After that, it was  a party time! :)

After rushing off from the F1 area, we went for Dandiya.. it was good fun… even though we were all tired, we danced our hearts away.. I still have blisters in my feet from that evening!!

Saturday was India-Pak match, which was a hugeeeeeeeeee let down! Anyways, we had the whole junta over at our place.. so, it was a great evening, nonetheless!! :)

Sunday was marked by Whats your Rashee? And well you know, how that turned out!! :P

Movie Review: Whats your Rashee? – Passable!!

Movie Review: Whats your Rashee? – Passable!!

The latest movie from the stable of Ashutosh Gowariker (of the Lagaan, Swades and Jodha Akbar fame) is What’s your Rashee?

The movie stars Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja.

Harman plays the role of Yogesh, a Gujarati Patel boy who is an MBA and well settled in US, when his family calls him to India urgently and force him to get married within 15 days. Apparently, the family is neck deep in debt and some astrologer has predicted that Yogesh will become a billionnaire the day he gets married. So, every one is now behind him to get married.

His uncle, Devu, played by Darshan Jariwala, arranges for him to meet 176 girls. Now, Yogesh has an idea. A book by the same name as the movie, fascinates him and he thinks he should give himself 12 chances to fall in love. So, he decides to meet 12 different girls, each from the 12 different Zodiac signs. So, devu starts arranging for these girls. Each of the 12 characters have been played by Priyanka Chopra. Finally, he decides to marry one of them. Which one and why? For that you will have to watch the movie :)

Let me now cut a long story short and tell you the strenghts and weaknesses of the movie.

Dussehra and my favorite character in Ramayana

Dussehra and my favorite character in Ramayana

Dussehra (or Vijayadashami) is a festival popularly celebrated all over India.

The story behind the festival goes like this. On this very day, Lord Rama killed Ravana to re-claim his wife Sita, who had been abducted by Ravana. This festival marks the victory of Goodness over Evil. On this day, people from all over India burn effigies of Ravana and conduct plays, popularly known as Raam Leela, which depict the entire story of how Rama fought the battle with Ravana and came back to his kingdom as a victorious king. Such plays are organised all over India. It is a must watch, if you havent seen any yet.

Speaking of Ramayana, it will be sacrilege if I do not mention my favorite character in the entire book: Devi Sita

Its Formula 1 (F1) time in Singapore… and the Navratri weekend!

Its Formula 1 (F1) time in Singapore… and the Navratri weekend!

This promises to be an exciting weekend with Formula 1 Singapore Night Race coming up and a Dandiya celebration being organised by the Gujarati Society.

Now, I am not too much of an F1 fan, so I was more keen on dandiya… But, that changed as Noobie managed to get us the Paddock Club passes, which will entitle us to walk on the pit lane… see the cars… meet the drivers, etc… Now, THIS sure is exciting :D

Yoohooooooooo!! :D

So, now I am almost as excited about F1 as I am about Dandiya! This, being my second Dandiya outside of India… the last one was a blast! Really looking forward to this one…

And before I forget, A very happy Navratri to all of you :)

[PS. Pictures coming soon...]

Forgetfulness as a disease.. and a few random things..

Forgetfulness as a disease.. and a few random things..

I opened my laptop today, and pop came the reminder of all the things that needed to be finished today! I let most of the items snooze as I knew they would linger on the back of my mind for a while and I may actually end up doing most of them…

And then, I saw the items of my desktop – I usually get perturbed, if it is very cluttered… I like to keep it clean! And there it was… lying in a dark corner… a notepad… with a name prompting it to be opened immediately! It said “To-Do List”… I scanned through the items and was happy to know most of them had been attended to.. At the same, saddened to see many items lying unattended for months now… I have such a bad habit of procrastinating that if I ignore something once, it is highly unlikely i will get to it until absolutely necessary!

That is what my life has become off late – a sea of reminders!! I have a reminder set for everything! It could be outlook reminders or phone reminders… or ipod reminders… or orkut/fb reminders… reminders of all sorts… they seem to be omnipresent… and are supposed to make my life easier…!! If the intended purpose is achieved is a different case altogether! ;)

Movie Review: Inglourious Basterds – Terrific!

Movie Review: Inglourious Basterds – Terrific!

The movie by Quentin Tarantino (of the Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction fame) is set in the early 1940s, the World War II era. The location is Nazi occupied French territory. Almost the entire movie is in either French or German, with sub-titles.

The movie starts with the introduction of the animosity of German soldiers towards Jews when Colonel Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz, comes to an isolated house of a French dairy farmer and digs down the Jews they were hiding beneath their floors. He opens fire but just one person of the family of 4 manages to escape – it is the girl named Shosanna Dreyfus, played by Melanie Laurent. Landa sees her running away, aims to shoot at her and then lets her go. This shows the character of a predator, who liked to hunt down his enemies and not merely shoot them. He liked to make them suffer rather than just kill them.

The first 15 mins of the movie give the viewer an insight on the kind of cruelty inflicted by the Nazis on the Jews. The analogy he gives about Nazis being Pradators like Hawks and the Jews being the hunted like the Rats, is chilling. The movie manages to grab your attention in the first few mins itself, a classic Tarantino, if I might add :)

Fast forward 3 years and Shosanna is now living as Emmanuelle Mimieux, a cinema owner in Paris. How she comes to own the cinema is not revealed in the movie. She tells everyone that she inherited it from her Aunt and Uncle.

And appears, Lieutenant Aldo Raine, played by Brad Pitt, along with his army of allies who call themselves “The Inglorious Basterds”. They are an army of jews with the only agenda of ousting the Nazis. They are very cruel with the german soldiers they can lay their hands upon. They scalp the heads of those they murder and those they leave, they mark their heads with the Nazi symbol of Swastika, so that they will never be able to disassociate themselves with the group, even if they want.

And then what follows is a war between the Nazis and the IBs, trying to hunt each other down. What unfolds in the movie is the thrilling climax with the twists and turns,  which are best enjoyed in the theatre.

So, go ahead and enjoy the movie. This one is definitely not to be missed. It is definitely a must-see!

[Disclaimer: Please note that this is an adult film with a lot of violence. So, please do not tag any kids along :) ]

The Glass Ceiling: How far have we got and what plans do we have of dealing with it?

The Glass Ceiling: How far have we got and what plans do we have of dealing with it?

A friend called up yesterday. She wanted to talk about something important. (Just for the info, she is a fresher and works for a highly reputed IT company with a sprawling campus in Pune). She started talking about how her team of 15 had just two women and how the entire team was biased towards men. So much so that, the team (the men folk) would do all the generally office time pass activities like planning for a lunch out or a tea session without so much as asking the two girls. What was even more surprising was that the Manager of the team was also party to all of this. If this was not enough, one guy in the team abused my friend over some silly issue, asking her to “Get out” of the cubicle. When this matter was taken to the manager, he laughed it off as a joke gone bad!

This is not a one off incident of the kind of bias women folk have to go through in their companies.  I have worked in IT companies before and I could sense this all the time. Usually, the bias depends on the number of women in your team. If it is equally balanced, then in all probabilities, you will not have to face the brunt directly. But, if it is not, you will face this… either in subtle forms (like not being invited to team gatherings) or in more crude ones (like the one with my friend) or worse, cases of exploitation and sexual harrassment by office colleagues.

Now, I am sure while reading this, a lot of you will be nodding your heads – Gender bias is soo common in companies (I will be talking about companies in India here) that if you have not faced this on your own, you would have definitely known someone who did.

While, the number of women passing out of Engineering colleges is increasing at a good rate, the gender ratio is still around 80:20 in favour of men. Thus, the number of women who get into companies is another 60% of that. The remaining either settle down into marital bliss or go for higher studies. The number is 14% as opposed to 1% in 1970. So, things have obviously improved and with women like Lalita Gupte, Kalpana Morparia, Anu Aga, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and Simone Tata paving the way, the future definitely looks brighter!

Despite all this, the sad reality is that… Even though we have come all this way, the road ahead is not easy! We have come a long way, but we have a longer way to go. The time to sit and listen to these stories, as if they were fables, is long gone. We now need to sit back and take charge of the situation in hand. The question we need to ask here is that

What is it that we can do to make things better?

  • Make sure that your company has a policy against “Sexual Harrassment”. If they do not, you should bring it to the notice of the HR and explain to them the importance of having a law abiding policy, which in turn, makes this a criminal offense.
  • Before joining a company, try to understand their take on women in the corporate world. If their thoughts do not match yours, there is no point working for them anyway!
  • If you happen to work in a team dominated by men, make sure your manager knows your take on gender bias. If, however, you get a feeling that he does not appreciate it, you can always take this up with his manager or the HR. Make sure, they know that you cant be messed with. (On a lighter note, the girls in the team can get together and invite themselves to whatever little gathering the guys may be having. They may find it awkward a few times, but then will slowly get used it :) )
  • Apart from the things you can do in your office area, you can create awareness amongst the people you meet every day – like friends and family. Try and personally take up the onus of educating a destitute girl child. There is nothing more satisfying than playing a small part in shaping the career of someone.

These are the few things that I could come up with. What is your take on this? Have you faced the glass-ceiling before? If you have, what did you do to overcome it?

To end this on a positive note, I would sincerely urge all my readers to take this up as a personal thing – Please do not let any kind of injustice happen in front of your eyes. If you see someone being victimised or someone being the bully, make sure you make it known to the concerned authorities. If you dont do it, nobody else will. After all, it is only with a small step that we can hope to build a better world!

I would also like you to put down your own ideas on What can be done? At the end of this, I will make a consolidated list of all the points and put them up here for people to read. That ways everyone can benefit out of our collective knowledge.

Turning Virtuality into Reality

Turning Virtuality into Reality

This is a topic that has been on my mind ever since I started blogging. But, it somehow always took a back seat. Uma’s post today truly made me want to write this piece.

The reasons internet became a sudden rage were very obvious: Information was no longer a rare commodity. It was available a click away. It appealed to all the masses because of the variety of things it had on offer.. There was a little some thing for every one. It was as if, internet had become a world of its own! People started calling it the virtual world. The virtual proximity people enjoyed was infectious.

You could chat with anyone in the world, without having to reveal your true identity or even show your real face/name. A certain amount of anonymity was associated with whatever you did on the internet. You could visit any site, do anything on the internet and no one would every know! (At least that is how it was back then when Internet was an infant)

All of this gave a certain sense of freedom to all and sundry. The introverted types could remain on the background and still make friends in the plethora of chat rooms! People started developing mixed personalities – people that they were in “real” life and what they wanted to be/were in the “virtual” world. It gave wings to the birds dying to fly out and explore the world. Something within them or around them prevented them from doing so in the real life… but in the virtual life, there was no stopping… no inhibitions whatsoever…

The Sunday Special Pasta

The Sunday Special Pasta

Noobie and I usually like our Sundays lazy.

Today was no different, but for one special pasta! We woke up late, met some friends for lunch… came back… played Tennis for some time… then went swimming… Lunch today was an exotic affair at an Italian place called Mondo Mia. This meant that the dishes were highly priced and quantity to satisfy a chipmunk!

Anyways, we ordered 2 pastas and 2 pizzas. Preparations were very cheesy which made us feel quite full then!

But, now, after a rally of Tennis and few laps of swimming, I am veryyyyyyy hungry!! Since the pastas at lunch were delicious but we all got to only “taste” them, I decided to make pastas for dinner. This is where Noobie gets an idea.

Noobie: Why dont I make a cream-based Spaghetti for you? (A couple of things should be noted here. Noobie has never made pasta before. He loves experimenting with food and trying his hand at cooking and the results are quite scrumptous everytime he does that)
Nova: But you have never made pasta before.
Noobie: Yes I know but I wanna try today!
Nova: Ok, Ill make it and you can watch me make it. That will give you a fair idea of how it is made and you can try your hand at it the next time (I am telling you I was hungy and I had no idea how long the experiment would take!!)
Noobie: No no… I want to make it without your help! Ill search for the recipe online and try it out.

At this point of time, I gave in! There was this child-like urge in him to make something from scratch and “on his own” today and I did not want to stifle it.

So, the status right now is that, he is in the kitchen trying to whip up some thing… while I am blogging about this special pasta I am about to have. (Not to mention, the few times I was called, to enquire where-abouts of a few things in the kitchen ;) )

Ummmm… I am already beginning to smell the boiled pasta! :D Cant wait for it to get over.

Will let you know how it turned out :D

Till then, enjoy the rest of your weekend! :D

Update: The pasta turned out excellent. The white sauce was creamy and cheezy… the pasta well cooked… Without exaggeration, it was definitely one of the better cream-based pastas I have had. Coming from me, thats a huge thing, since I am very finicky about my pastas! :)

Here is a pic… sorry for the poor quality!

Pasta

Doesnt it look yummyyyyyyyy? :)

A thousand little things…

A thousand little things…

ok not exactly a thousand… but quite a many to actually count :)

I have been looking for a good topic to write on for the past week or so… There were these little little incidents which were not not worthy of having an entire post dedicated to them… at the same time, worth a mention nonetheless!

So, here I go… A thousand odd things that crossed my mind lately…

  • When I started blogging again and checked my fav blogs once more and found some new interesting ones too… it felt good… it felt like i belonged here but was so involved with other aspects of life, that ended up completely ignoring this. Not that I regret it, coz the time I was away was well utilised :D
  • Was watching glimpses of the Farah Khan show “Tere Mere Beach Me”. It is an interesting talk show – with a difference. While her brother’s show “Sajid‘s Superstars” is way too bad to be even called a show, Farah’s show holds her own. Firstly, all her shows are based on a theme. Then she invites someone who is a living example of that theme! Whats more? She donates 1 lakh rupees to anyone who genuinely needs it and the guests have to bring along a personal items of theirs which is then auctioned and given to charity!! Hmmm… not too bad for a theme! But are they really doing it? That, I guess, we will never know!! :?
  • One of the episodes of the show was “Girl child”, a topic that I am very touchy about. Farah had invited Bipasha Basu and Shilpa Shetty for the show as they both belong to all-girls families and have been doing very good for themselves. The show did touch a raw nerve and brought me down. I guess this topic deserves a post altogether!
  • Even after being MIA from the blogging world for almost a year, I was pleasantly surprised to see my blog ranks 64th in indiblogger. That made me feel happy and sad both at the same time. Its like I had been the bad parent who was not giving her deserving child a due chance! Well, now I am back and hopefully will go upwards from here.
  • I do not find Mandira Bedi classy. I dont think she is any different from Rakhi Sawant. Yeah, I feel that strongly about it. Read the rest of this entry

When was the last time you…

When was the last time you…

Its not really a tag… but I intend to convert it into one :D

I found it here and really wanted to answer all those questions :)

So, here I go

When was the last time you –

  • Sang into a hairbrush at the top of your voice in front of the mirror? Yesterday
  • Jumped into a puddle and didn’t care about the state of your clothes? Never. I hate rains. Well.. yeah I am weird!
  • Finished your ice cream in 2 minutes flat and looked around to see if someone would share theirs with you? Not icecream (I dont like them much either)… but it was a cake at PK’s birthday last Friday
  • Played your favourite song as loud as possible, over and over again? Yesterday. No points for guessing the song. I must have listened to it a few hundred times to say the least
  • Walked barefeet on wet grass? Hmmm… its been looooooonggg since I did that!!
  • Got excited at the prospect of going to the zoo/beach/park/anywhere? Today. Believe it or not. M actually excited at the prospect of eating good Mexican food at this new place tonight :D
  • Played a game where you made up the rules as you went along? Last weekend. It was Monopoly :D
  • Made up a secret language for just you and a friend? Ohhhhhhhhh!! I remember doing this when I was in 7th Standard with a friend, I have lost touch with! :(
  • Found a pretty stone and kept it? December 2008 -> Bali
  • Laughed your head off for no particular reason? Few mins ago, on a call with a dear dear friend :)
  • Painted with your fingers? I dont think I have ever done that!! :O
  • Gave yourself a lame nick name? Never! :?
  • Found no money in your wallet and didn’t care? Today :P

Just when did you grow up?

I guess I havent!! :O

I am not going to tag particular people here… Please feel free to tag yourself, if you liked this :)

Raat ke dhai baje… From Kaminey

Raat ke dhai baje… From Kaminey

Song:  Raat Ke Dhai Baje
Singers: Kunal Ganjawala, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rekha Bhardwaj, Suresh Wadkar, Earl
Lyricist: Gulzar
Music Director: Vishal Bhardwaj

“Raat Ke Dhai Baje Lyrics”

Raat ke dhai baje
koi shehnai baje
dil ka bazaar laga
dhela taka pai baje
tana… tarata ta ra ra.. – 2
Raat ke dhai baje
koi shehnai baje
dil ka bazaar laga
dhela taka pai baje
chaunke chaunke chaunke se
khoye khoye se hum
aankhen doobi doobi se
soye soye se hum
dil ne kaisi durgath ki hai
Oh oh…
pehli baar mohabbat ki hai, aha…
aji aakhri baar mohabbat ki hai, aha…
arey pehli baar mohabbat ki hai, aha…
aakhri baar mohabbat ki hai , aha…
Jaan hatheli, upar leli
yaaro kaisi harkat ki hai
aji pehli baar mohabbat ki hai, aha…
aakhri baar mohabbat ki hai
[ ishq mein jalte hue
saans tezabi lage
raaz khulta hi nahi
koi toh chaabi lage ] – 2
ishq mein jalte hue
saans tezabi lage
saans tezabi lage
ishq mein jalte hue
chikne chikne lachhe hain
reshmi se phande
chupdi chupdi baaton mein
bhole bhale bande
tanhai ne fursat di hai
[arey pehli baar mohabbat... ki hai
aakhri baar mohabbat ki hai ] – 2
raat kuch aisa hua
jaisa hota toh nahi
thaam ke rakha mujhe
main bhi khota toh nahi
ek hi lat suljhane mein
saari raat guzaari hai
jaan ki gathri sar pe le li
aapne kaisi zehmat dee hai
arey pehli baar mohabbat ki hai
aakhri baar mohabbat ki hai
pehli baar mohabbat ki hai
I had written about the movie a while ago and as if that was not enough, here I am with the lyrics of my mostttttttttttttt fav song from the movie: Raat ke dhai bhaje!! Though, I dont like calling it that… Coz I think the most catchy part of the song is: “Pehli baar mohabbat ki hai… aaha… aji aakhiri baar mohabbat ki hai… aaha!!” The rap that goes on in the background jells beautifully with the tune. Whats weirdly beautiful about this song is that 2 female playback singers have given voice to one actress in the same song? And it doesnt sound bad at all!!! You can expect only Vishal to come up with something like that… The beautiful urdu words by Gulzaar saab add a new flavour to the song!
The post on the song can not be completed without mention of the playback singers, who have made the song sooo alive. Rekha Bharadwaj‘s voice has so much namak… the style in which she sings the song beats even the likes of Sunidhi Chauhan. They complement each other very well.. The song has also revived long lost singer Suresh Wadkar… After “Tum se mil ke“, this song gives the veteran singer his due credit. Kunal Ganjawala strikes again after “Bheege Honth
You catch the song here:

Are the parents of today negligent towards their children?

Are the parents of today negligent towards their children?

A couple of blogs I chanced upon yesterday spoke of women trying hard to drive a balance between work and the humongous responsibilities that come from raising a child. Their hardships, differences with the in-laws/parents regarding thoughts on parenting and sometimes not-so-supportive husbands can lead to a difficult life – not just for the mother but also for the child.

So, the question now is where does all this start?

Firstly, Men are not the only earning member of the families anymore. The erstwhile bread earner is not the man alone. Women are now at the same educational level, if not better, as their spouses and are doing exceptionally well in the professional domain. So, with the dual income coming in and getting a taste of the “zombie” lifestyle, it is sometimes very difficult for a couple to settle down and have kids. No wonders then, that DINKs are the next most proliferating community all over the world! Which is scary on one end, but good on the other. If you can not undertake the responsibility of bearing and raising a child, it is better to not have them in the first place.

On that note, let us talk of couples who do bear children (vansh jo aage badhana hai), but hardly have time for them. Both the parents are busy with work during weekdays, and then busy socializing over weekends. Where does that leave them the time for their child? Such parents almost always have enough moolah to be able to afford expensive Nannies. So, while they are doing well professionally and are busy building a good network of friends, their children end up having no emotional bond or connection whatsoever with them. They are, in fact, more attached to their Nannies than they are to their own mother. Our society is rife with examples of such children, turning into psychopaths or confused/insecure adults.

Parenting was never easy and with both parents working, it becomes all the more difficult. It involves making a lot of personal sacrifices for the better upbringing of the child. During such times, some women have to make the hard choice of quitting work. The decision is never easy, but it is quite heartening to see how naturally it comes to some women! It is not a sacrifice anymore. They are more than willing to do this for their little one. Sadly though, percentage of women wanting to give up their career for the sake of child is falling fast.

I had a conversation once with a friend of mine who said “When we have a child, we will put him/her to Day Care or hire a Nanny. When both the people are working, and you are used to a certain living standard, it is extremely difficult to go back to running households on single income, specially with the increased financial burden of carrying a child.” Whatever he says makes complete practical sense. My concern here is, does that make sense for the child? Is it fair on your part to bring him to the world and then not have enough time for him?

At this juncture, I am reminded of something that Sudha Murthy once said.

Q: He also gave you choice and he said that both of you couldn’t be at Infosys together. He gave you the choice of joining Infosys but you chose to pull back and not do it — at any point of time did you think that maybe you would have liked to have done on?

Sudha Murthy: No, it was very hard for me, it was not a easy decision because in 1968 I joined an engineering college and in 1972 I graduated. There was not a single girl in the university.

For a person like me who was so career conscious and who was so fond of technical things, it was very hard. But Murthy being a very strong person, he said it’s either you or me.

When he said that, then I thought practically. If I am in, then he is out and when you start a company you have to run around, stay away from the family, everything you have to do and I am a woman, I couldn’t be away from the family and the children.

Secondly, I knew children require their mother at an early stage of life and not so much when they grow up. Whatever value system you teach, it’s only in those crucial years. So, therefore I said okay and I made the decision but my heart was very heavy. It took many years for me to reconcile to this.

There are a couple of things I like about this particular quote. Firstly, Narayana Murthy always knew that his wife was as talented as he was. Knowing this, he never told her that he will do the earning, while she should take care of the house. He gave her an equal standing as a life partner, when he put that decision on her to decide. It was either her or him. This shows that the man has character and at the same time knows that children do not grow up on Nannies. They need at least one parent with them at all times (till a certain age ofcourse).

All said and done, it is still not easy for all women to give up on everything that they have done all their lives. I believe the world is rising up to this dilemma women face, with more and more companies now giving the option of “working from home” to such women. Worst case scenarios, it is probably a good idea to stay with either set of parents. That ways when you are out of the home for a few hours, you know that your child is in safe hands of his Grand Mother/Grand Father.

To end this, my sincerest best wishes to all the single parents out there who have to manage everything on their own, hats off to those working men and women who are able to manage well both their children and professional lives.. And to top it all, double hats off to those men/women who let go of everything for their child, with a BIG smile on their face :)

Love you all :)
