Its Karva chauth time :))

Before I begin the post, let me add that I am not particularly in favor of fasts – I dont think torturing yourself by not eating is a good way to impress God!

Nonetheless, there is something innately sweet and pristine about Karva ChauthI just love it :)

I grew up watching my mom go through a day with a biggggg smile on her face and would always wonder how she got the strength to go through the day without a morsel of food or a drop of water.. Over the years, I began to appreciate all the emotions that Karva Chauth stands for… It is yet another expression of love… pure, unadulerated love for your husband.

A few people (feminists) think why only women should keep such fasts… why not men?

To that I would say… we women are lucky that we have a medium to express our love and dedication… If a man wants to keep this fast for his wife, he can… but he shouldnt be forced to do that…

Just like love cant be forced upon people, so shouldnt an expression of love :)

I am excited about today – my first ever Karva Chauth… :) Let us see if I survive the day :)

Yes it’s Karva Chauth, it isn’t followed in my in-laws side but I have grown up seeing my mom & then later my bhabhi going thru the day!!! Have some wonderful memories of the day!!!

And am sure that you will survive the day well!!! Good luck & all my strength to you is what I wish for you :-)

    Ooooo…all the best :)
I don’t believe in fasts but I don’t impose my views on others. Wish others would do that and not judge my not fasting too!

Most feminists feel so coz it is forced on most women. Had it been optional for women and men, it would have been fair and square. :)

      Thanks so much :)

These days I do not think it is imposed on anyone. A lot of women chose not to keep it or tweak it to suit their requirements… while a lot of men keep it along with their wives! :)

We are definitely moving in the right direction :)

First of all, Happy first Karva Chauth!
I just mailed u before reading this post… I am also not too much in favour of fasts but I love Karwa chauth and Ahoi ashtmi. These two are the fasts that hold prime importance for me. You definitely will survive it. You somehow get the strength for it… This is my fourth karwa chauth and I simply love it!

All the best lady. I doubt I’ll ever follow anything like this. Love or expression of love, I detest the fact that some rituals are gender specific. And by that I mean, its always the woman to follow them.

And though I may sound like the feminist u mentioned in ur post, I wudnt ever ask my man to follow the fast in return or whatever. Thats as silly as the ritual to me!

But I still think, Karwa Chauth is very cute in its own way. ll the best. Stay strong :)

Just finished our one month fasting, didn’t eat anything the whole day… it wasn’t painful… rather it feels good to do sacrifice for one you love :)

    Have a nice day! :)

    All the best!

Though I have my reservations about fasts which only women take up, I am fine with it as far as it is not forced or expected out of them.

Hope you have a lovely time :) Am sure you will.

Lucky are those husbands for whom their wives dedicate a day and keep fast (w/o anyone forcing them to do it)….!! I hope your husband realizes this :) .

Thank you Pradeep! :) Its a very special feeling and I personally know many south Indians and people from other parts of India, who keep this fast only because they want to.. They dont have to do this as a ritual :)

Its beautiful to see them do this.. :)

In Kerala there is a custom similar to Karva-Chauth called ‘Thiruvathira’ when women fast the whole day and pray to Lord Shiva. It is not followed that much these days as women are liberated. :D Also, Kerala under communist rules rejected many of those old customs. I still know some women who fast on that day.

I like when both husband and wife fast on Karva-chauth. Many of our friends do that.

Hope you have a fabulous day. All decked up singing..bole choodiyaan. :D

Heyyy I dint know that :) Thanks for telling me about it :)

Yes, it is an awesome feeling of togetherness when you go through the ordeal as a couple and then celebrate love by breaking the fast :)

Hehehhehee.. I shud have read this msg of urs yday… wud have done a little “Bole chudiyan” ;)

Its not true that men never keep fasts. I kept one just because my to-be wife kept one. If she kept the fast for my long life – well so did I :-)
I have 2 hrs to go (US time zone) :-)

Its true that most men these days are fasting for their wives… No custom tells them to do so, but they still do it out of their own volition! :)

Kudos to you for fasting with your to-be-wife :) Please let her know on my behalf how lucky she is :)
