Beautiful analysis of Depression!!

2009 November 6

Depression is defined by google as “a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity

These days it is so common to hear of people saying “I am feeling depressed”!

I was listening to the words of Sri Sri Ravishankar once. In him, I find, an inspiring leader and a treasure of wisdom. Something he said, made a lot of sense to me. He said

Have you ever known a poor man being depressed? Depression is a luxury that only those people enjoy who have everything in life. Someone who doesnt know where his next meal is coming from, doesnt really have the “time” nor the “energy” to be depressed. He is too busy arranging for his square meals!!

@ Brocasarea – i would like to add.. Please check your own reply and you will find yourself agreeing to her more than disagreeing..

why do you think it is common in upper class…?

  2. 2009 November 6

I agree. We whine and whine while people put up with life with brave faces.

Depression is a state of mind indeed.
Ravi Shankar’s Depression vs Poverty comparision is absurd.

I read what you have written. All I can say is, you can go on proving things wrong… you can go on finding faults with things/people… Thats always the easy way, isnt it? However, it takes a LOTTT to actually have unwavering faith!!

Why cant we just take things for what they are, without strip-analysing them? Yes, his org charges enormous sum of money for the courses. If tomorrow they do not charge anything for it, people will not take it seriously! And thats a fact! Human beings do not value anything they get for free… which is why it becomes imperative to charge! As far as doing it for the poor, did you know he conducts courses in prisons? he conducts courses in small villages/towns which are largely inaccessible?

You may find his comparison absurd, I am sure you have a better description of depression. Good for you!

I am aware of all his classes at prisons and villages.
That is no reason to accept everything he talks is wisdom.

Anyways, we can agree to disagree on this.

Aside, I have been reading you for a while.
I don’t think you will remember, but we have met @ Great Lakes.
A friend introduced me to you.

        • 2009 November 9

Yes. you are right. There is no reason to accept everything he talks. Anyways, the mind is wired to accept things which make sense to it.. and these make sense to my mind, which is why I accept it!

Oh really!? So, are you from Great Lakes too?

    I liked the quote :D

  5. 2009 November 6

But you should refer back to Maslow’s hierarchy of want..true, but for “self actualization” having a good mental health is also important..the idea is that different people have different needs and all are needs…poor kids need to be fed and so also we need to help rich kids into drugs..not the same thing, but what is common is that there is something wrong…

  6. 2009 November 7

So right! You know, the more options we get, the more whinier we get too!

While some people do suffer from chronic depression, a lot of people just think that they are depressed. Sometimes, apparently being idle brings about depression too..

    • 2009 November 8

I personally know people who suffer from chronic depression! I, for one, can not understand why they wud put themselves through that torture!!

  7. 2009 November 7

i sooo agree…only people that have the time to whine and crib about things get depressed…and then there are those brave ones out there who just dont have this luxury (??)…
