Year: 2007

Parzania is a movie, which won its actress, Sarika and director, Rahul Dholakia, the national awards for the year 2007. And rightly so…

There are a lot of movies, you see and forget, Parzania is one which will leave an ever-lasting impression in your mind. Coz it brings to the fore, the facts… relating to the Gujarat riots… truth, uncensored! Even though, it was a movie, there was minimal dramatization of the entire situation. Actually something that was this dramatic in itself, doesnt really need added masala!

For a change, I dont want to talk about the movie as such… Good acting, good script, a well-made movie… All that aside, I want to talk about the theme…

Had watched this movie last weekend… The movie had disturbed me soo much… I remember crying all by myself hours after the movie had gotten over… by then I was too emotionally exhausted to write anything about it… watched it again this weekend, watched it with a fellow Amdawadi… For about 100 minutes during the movie, there was silence… none of us spoke… but we knew what the other was thinking…

When it happened on the 28th February, people all over Gujarat were shocked by the ruthlessness of the entire situation. Some people lost their all – their loved ones, their families, their business.. they were rendered homeless and helpless! While some just “witnessed” it all, and several others simply got to know about it all from the people and media. Only those who lost their loved ones probably are haunted with the demons even now… Coz for them, life changed so much… I dont think it will ever be the same…

Those who “witnessed” it, probably were in shock (with a silent prayer escaping their lips, that it wasn’t them) for a week, at max a month, or say maybe a year…

So many years after the massacre, the monstrousness of the entire situation has not changed… but did we, or could we do anything about it?

Dont know how it all started… Or, who started it… History is rife with instances of communal violence even centuries ago, during the time of Mughal Emporer Aurangzeb… But, the fight has been on for too long… its not even amusing! The riots under dissection here were started by the Muslims who burnt down an entire train carrying hindu priests common people at Godhra… Hindus retaliated on a much larger scale and burnt down muslims and their propeties and businesses…

Since then, there have been innumerable reportings of terrorist attacks and communal violence all over India… Masjids being attacked, temples being burnt down… Who is the loser here!?????

Were those innocent people, at any fault, who were burnt down in the train??? Or were those innocent people, at any fault, who were made to run away from their homes and watched their life-long savings go down the gutter… NOTHING, what-so-ever justifies the brutality of the entire situation – pregnant women being set on fire, men stripped naked and cut into pieces, women’s breasts being cut out and thrown away – Can these be acts of a human, whether Hindu or Muslim!??? NO!!!! I am quite positive that those fanatics dont care a hoot about Ram or Allah, they are just using God’s names to commit hienous crimes!!!

Who is the sufferer here??? It is not those fanatics, who are desperately and brutally trying to prove a point – a point, they themselves dont understand!!! It is those people, who have nothing at all to do with any of this… all they want to do, is earn their square meals, feed their families and live a normal, peaceful life…
