I remember a time when beauty pageants were glorified to the extent that you would have trailors of these pageants showcased at least a month before the event… Off late, I was wondering where have these pageants disappeared!???
I got my answer. At precise this moment, NDTV Good Times channel is telecasting Miss India Worldwide.
Its really a painful sight. The contestants seem ordinary, though better than the ones we had immediately after the trio (Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra and Diya Mirza) won accolades for India, abroad and made these pageants a household name…
Sadly, the current status of these pageants is that, firstly no one knows when they will be telecasted… and secondly, no one wants to watch them even if they catch them live on television….
Such a sad state they have come to…
But, I dont understand what led to the downfall?
they’re just plain ugly these days. that’s all. it offends me if you even slightly suggest that the objectification of women isn’t in anymore in india.
Well i would say its all about marketing by the media and catching on to what sells….. the trio came into the news because that time few years ago shushmita and ashwariya made news and the knew that the Indian fashion industry was knocking on the doors of the till then super powers of fashion..paris, NY etc….. at that time modelling in India had also not been a huge thing ….the twin successes caught the imagination of the common people… many more Teenagers and graduate aspirants wanted to be involved in the Glam world, even parents started to be more supportive…..
The media as usual didnt want to miss out on this and gave thi extensive coverage…so much so that they termed fashion industry as the next indian revolution and Miss India was such an easy face of all this ….
Apart from all this, girls now a days in competitions are also not upto that mark
1) The pagent doesn’t depict true intelligence/smartness
2) It depicts women as “objects”
3) Most of these “air kissing” ladies use the pagent as a ticket to Bollywood, nothing more
4) Most “real” women do not identify with the anorexic & plastic lifestyles these ladies lead
5) Most of these contests have Stupid Bollywood people on their panel
6)I do NOT remember any Miss India affecting me enough to “respect”/”await” the pagent year after year…
The above are just SOME of the reasons I can think of rightaway…If u want some more..lets catch up after i Watch the repeat telecast of Miss India 😛
I guess it’s because there are a lot more things you can watch on “international channels” these days than there were in those days. Plus, in those days, these contests were rare. These days every city, every state and every country is holding one. Every month you can have a Miss Punjab, Miss Maharashtra etc. The novelty of the concept is lost, hence it doesn’t sell.
Every face these days has to compete for attention globally. And most of them look amazingly similar and pretty unpretty.
I guess too much of everything is bad. Do you remember 10 years back Filmfare awards also had there own charm but now nobody cares because every Tom, Dick or Harry has started its own set of Awards and the thing just lost its charm. Now if an actor does not win the Filmfare, he thinks – Oh there are 1544 more award functions this year…i’ll surely win in one of them. Same thing happened here also. Its sad but its true. 😦
Hmm I agree with shyam that an Indian gild winning was a novelty in the past. But that novelty has worn off…
Plus the last time I did catch the pageant and the high standards set by the likes of Sushmita and Lara are no longer there.
I agre with the comments here. Now there are hell lot of beauty contests like Miss south india, miss femina south india, miss kerala, miss india, miss universe, miss world.
Who is going to keep track of all this ” 😀
India is the biggest consumer of all kinda beauty products. and the reason we have this many number of beauty contests is one of them much of them spnosored by the beauty product industry.
i think it is because the mnc cosmetic industry is now well known and tv culture has set in..
but it hasn’t died down in small towns and cities beauty pageants are big business
anyways i have never been a big fan of those
Wooooh….
Hey I agree with you that most pageants have lost their charm, Miss India Worldwide seemed quite refreshing. True, it had its own share of average gals, but the girls who won the crowns were seriously pretty. And you should have seen the Question Answer round. These girls were pretty smart too!
@Shreyas: Yes i did watch it… was wondering though that why has the popularity being affected? The girls were good then why not give them their deserved attention… at least half of what their senior got…
@Sathish: whoooops!!
@Prax: TV culture setting in and MNC cosmetic companies opening up in India should increase the attention given to these pageants. What say?
@Xylene: I agree a lot of other comp coming up. But that doesnt take away the charm of Miss INDIA. Does it?
@baryaal: but that doesnt mean these contests werent popular. they were. What happ suddenly?
@Anamika: Contestants are still ok. Not great maybe. But certainly not bad. This time they were good in fact.
@Aniche: You really think so?
@mydreamz: agree with most of what u have said. The point still remains. Why were they popular back then and arent anymore.
@Ish: I agree that the novelty is lost, maybe!
@Amit: Lol! So true!
agree nova , and ish has a point
but what happens is that the cosmetic companies put a lot of focus on a nation when they want to promote their products in a nation , and mostly the queen of that nation is in the top 3. plus there are so many tv channels these days that people can access so many more channels like ftv etc if they are so into fashion.
