Commercialization of love… — February 14, 2012

Commercialization of love…

[Source: http://www.drawinghowtodraw.com/]

IMHO, celebrating Valentine’s Day is a good idea. In fact, I believe every important relationship in your life should have a day dedicated to it! Its like celebrating Raksha bandhan, you dont need a day to tell your brother/sister how much they mean to you but having a day dedicated to that relationship means you leave everything else aside and dedicate that particular day in the memory or if you are lucky, then actually being with that loved one. This is precisely the reason why I am not opposed to the idea of Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc. It doesnt mean you dont love them or care for them the rest of the year. It just means that when life is rushing by and you are losing track of time, on a particular day you leave everything aside, take a step back and actually be with that special someone…

What I do NOT like about “days” is the commercialisation of love, the one emotion that makes everything else in your life worthwhile. Suddenly everyone from the flower guy to the chocolate owners to the greeting card gallery owners start charging from 100-200% markup on all their merchandise… and the sad part is that we fall prey to those things and burn our hard-earned money on chocolates/flowers/gifts! Many of us succumb to it due to peer pressure or the expectations set by the said loved one.. “Tum mere liye kuch nahi laaye? Tum mujhse pyar nahi karte!” Now thats the last thing you want to hear from that special someone on that day, right?

How about this? You celebrate love by thinking of each other, by spending it with each other… but instead of doling out inexplicable amount of money on flowers that will wither come tomorrow, or chocolates that will give you the extra calories you can do without, why not take a longgg walk and set aside some money to bring a smile to someone else’s life. Bring a smile on your loved one’s face by contributing your bit to someone else 🙂

On a fun note, as Sheldon Cooper once said, “Given that St. Valentine was a 3rd century Roman Priest who was stoned and beheaded, wouldn’t a more appropriate celebration of the evening be taking one’s steady gal to witness a brutal murder?” 😀

Have a fun day, guys 🙂

The Year 2010: What worked and what did not! — December 29, 2010

The Year 2010: What worked and what did not!

Hellooo people 🙂

That time of the year when you gather your thoughts on what went by.. I like to do that by making a list of things that happened around the world – what worked for me and what did not.

 What worked:

  1. Indian audience started reacting to and appreciating low-budget movies made with nothing to promote except brilliant script and some great piece of acting – Letting movies talk for themselves – That seemed to have been the flavour of 2010. (A shining eg: Udaan)
  2. The financial world that was crumbling in 2008 and 2009, became a little more stable in 2010.
  3. Thirty-three miners near Copiapó, Chile, trapped 700 metres underground in a mining accident in San José Mine, are brought back to the surface after surviving for a record 69 days – Brilliant use of modern age technology
  4. Researchers at CERN trap 38 antihydrogen atoms for a sixth of a second, marking the first time in history that humans have trapped antimatter

***************************************************************

What did not:

  1. Natural calamities continued to hit the world: Massive earthqukes in Chile (Largest ever), Haiti (Deadliest ever), China
  2. Deepwater Horizon oil spill led to one of the largest in history – causing lot of harm to the aquatic flora and fauna
  3. Numerous air-flights all over the world crashed, killing hundreds of travellers:
    1. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409 crashes into the Mediterranean Sea shortly after take-off from Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport, killing all 90 people on-board.
    2. The President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, is among 96 killed when their airplane crashes in western Russia
    3. Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771 crashes at runway at Tripoli International Airport in Libya, killing 103 of the 104 people on board
    4. Air India Express Flight 812 overshoots the runway at Mangalore International Airport in India, killing 158 and leaving 8 survivors
    5. Aero Caribbean Flight 883 crashes in central Cuba, killing all 68 people on board
  4. Indian Hindi film industry saw a series of flops, some really big budget movies with some big stars sinking at the box office: Kites, Raavan, Guzaarish, Action Replayy, including the latest Tees Maar Khan
  5. Protests in Bangkok, Thailand ends with a bloody military crackdown, killing 91 and more than 2,100 injured
  6. WikiLeaks releases a collection of more than 250,000 American diplomatic cables, including 100,000 marked “secret” or “confidential” – The world just isn’t safe anymore. I would not be surprised, if this alone leads to World War III
  7. Volcanic ash from one of several eruptions beneath Eyjafjallajökull, an ice cap in Iceland, began to disrupt air traffic across northern and western Europe

I just noticed that the downs outweigh the ups! 😦 Here is hoping when I make this list one year from today, there are far more ups than downs!

Let us welcome the year of new hopes, new desires and new mountains to be climbed!

Here’s wishing you all a fantastic 2011 🙂

[PS: Did I miss out anything? Let me know if I did :)]

One woman you idolize… — March 8, 2010

One woman you idolize…

A very Happy Woman’s Day to all you beautiful women out there… 🙂 And dear male readers, please pass on my best wishes to all the women in your lives 🙂

On this day today… I kept wondering on who is the one woman I idolize in this world… There are many, really… But, after a lot of thought, I could come up with just one: My Nani (Mom’s mom)

She is, without doubt, the most strong-minded, confident and supremely talented woman I know! Her life was not a bed of roses, but she rose from all the difficulties and traumas to carve a niche of her own!! I can still remember all those bed time stories she would tell me, when I was a child… A lot of those characters and stories still reverberate in my head… They would all have morals at the end of it… And I cant thank her enough for her indubitable contribution in my up-bringing…

Thanks Nani.. Love ya… Muaaaaaaaahhhhhh 🙂

So, tell me about one woman you idolize.. doesnt necessarily have to be someone you know, could also be a famous woman who is known for her strenght, courage or even beauty…

Go on… tell us about her 🙂

So, will you be playing Holi this time? — March 1, 2010

So, will you be playing Holi this time?

That is the question I asked most of my friends and the unanimous reply every time would be “No!

Holi is one of my favorite festivals… I enjoyed playing it a lot with family and friends, when I was in India…!!  And it was awesomeeeeeeeeee fun!! This is one thing I miss about being in Singapore… I hear there are a few places where holi is played even here… but then, without family/friends, it isnt really that much fun, is it?

But, what concerns me is that even in India, despite Holi being a National Holiday, there is an increasing number of people who are ditching the festival…

What do you think is the reason?

Now, while we ponder over that… Wishing you all a joyful holi… 🙂 Hope you have a great one… and you play to your heart’s content! 🙂

Love is in the air… :) — February 9, 2010

Love is in the air… :)

I consider February as the month of love… Not just because it has the most universally celebrated day of the year, the Valentine’s Day, but also represents the sacred thread of love which bound two of the purest souls on Earth forever – Yes, its my parents’ Wedding Anniversary! 🙂 Love you, mom and dad 🙂

So, that officially makes February the “Love Month of the year” 🙂

Talking of love, I sometimes wonder if it is indeed the most “loosely” used word in English dictionary… do we really mean it when we use it? Then how do people fall in and out of love with so much ease, as if just changing into a fresh piece of clothing!

And yet, everyone seems to be in constant search for love… even those already married or seeing someone! The quest for that “perfect soul mate” has ruined many a lives in the past and will continue to do so in the future… whatever happened to the concept of “Eternal love”? People use the word “love” to depict their ulterior motives… They often confuse love with lust, obssession and what not! Are we running behind an illusion, which is anything but love?

While designing the theme page for the blog, I cudnt help but wonder… Love has never been more celebrated than today’s times… We have days to celebrate our love with that special someone! Innumerable number of ways in which love can be expressed… u have e-cards, letters, e-mails… Communication media is at its all time best! Facebook, orkut, u name it… And yet, love of the yesteryears survived the toughest of the hardships and was truly eternal… It was never important to say it out loud then… it was felt in the eyes!! There was a romantic subtlety about it… which made it sooo pristine and pure… much unlike today, when one seems more engrossed in finding the best of the lot… and the search never ends… coz the moment u have found someone, there will always be someone better waiting around…!! I am not sure if you guys did notice this… whenever there is a break-up, the one breaking up always has someone better in their mind already! The entire phenomenon has been sadly reduced to a strategy game of sorts!

Sigh!

And yet, there are some others who deeply and truly understand what love is…

Let us just hope that with all our fancy dos and amidst all the dhinchak means, we are able to celebrate love in its purest and most unadulterated form! 🙂

Enjoy 🙂

Super talented bro!! — January 29, 2010

Super talented bro!!

My mom’s side of the family is super talented!!!… At times I look at the whole lot with such an awe, its almost too good to believe.. I sometimes even wonder from where does all the talent come from?!! The best part is every one of them is super successful in their careers, some well known doctors, engineers, IAS officers, MBAs and the likes… And yet, each and every one of them has abundant talent – They are all artists (pretty good ones at that!) in their own right!

I have always believed talent is something that you do not need to learn. Its something you have in your blood… Its like having a knack for something!!

This thought comes alive everytime I am surrounded by these naturally talented people! Most of them are musically oriented – singers, dancers, drummers, pianists, tabla players, bongo congo players galore!! Apart from that you have shayars (Poets), painters and writers too…

One of my mom’s uncle can actually play any damn song on any instrument within minutes!! He is usually the one in charge in any family function for getting everyone together and turning the evening into a gala musical one! The best part is, none of them wud have any time to practise (considering their professional obligations), and yet the evening would be rocking!! The singers in the family sing like that is all they have been doing all their lives… the instrumentalists play as if they practise every single day of their lives!!

Its very humbling and motivating to be around such incredibly talented people. Its an honor!

And here I welcome… son of my favorite Mama (Maa‘s brother) – Abhinav aka DJ Abhi Spinzz!

Apart from doing his MBBS, he has taken a fancy to DJing… check out his first creation. You will love it 🙂

[PS Did I mention my mom’s grand-dad was a famous Shayar? His collection of shayaris may soon translate into a book. Will keep you guys updated! :)]

Theme of the month: Maa! — January 4, 2010

Theme of the month: Maa!

Maa in Hindi stands for Mother – the most blessed, humane and kind person on planet Earth. We may love someone, we may hate someone… but I am yet to come across a single soul who does not passionately love their mother!

This month’s theme is dedicated to Maa as it is a very special day in my life… If not for today, me and my sister would not have been in this world… we were not only brought to this world, but also cherished and nourished with utmost care and everlasting love, to make us who we are… She only gives and expects nothing in return…

Some of my fav quotes on mothers

Women are aristocrats, and it is always the mother who makes us feel that we belong to the better sort.  ~John Lancaster Spalding

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.  ~Tenneva Jordan

Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs in my field, since the payment is pure love.  ~Mildred B. Vermont

I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me.  They have clung to me all my life.  ~Abraham Lincoln

All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.  ~Abraham Lincoln

Sweater, n.:  garment worn by child when its mother is feeling chilly.  ~Ambrose Bierce

If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?  ~Milton Berle

Women’s Liberation is just a lot of foolishness.  It’s the men who are discriminated against.  They can’t bear children.  And no one’s likely to do anything about that.  ~Golda Meir

Mother’s love is peace.  It need not be acquired, it need not be deserved.  ~Erich Fromm

A man’s work is from sun to sun, but a mother’s work is never done.  ~Author Unknown

A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.  ~Irish Proverb

A person spends so much of time and effort in building relationships, which foster into friendships and everlasting bonds… and even then, the bond between the mother and her children remains unparelleled. From a purely accounting perspective, you put in nothing, but get the world from it!

On her birthday, all I can tell my mom is… in all my lives (yes, I believe in reincarnation)… I would like to have the privilege of being born as her child! Thanks for being my mom… 🙂 🙂 🙂

Love u Mom 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 Love you to death 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hope you have the best and the loveliest birthday ever! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Happy Holiday Season all of you :) — December 29, 2009
Its that month of the year… — November 19, 2009

Its that month of the year…

… when you think of the butterflies in your stomach last year and smile about it now

… when the anticipation, anxiety, and a whole flurry of emotions last year gathered u so tight, it was difficult to breathe after a while..

… when the presence of some blessed souls around you (you know who you are :)) made the journey leading to the final steps a lottttttt easier!

… when you hated the fact that you were born a daughter and have to “so-called” leave your house for your husband’s! Well I still rant about it… poor Noobie!

… when you started questioning a lot of Indian customs like “kanyadaan”… and the sanity of the same… and also why people are following it so religiously… refusing to budge!? Am I the only one who feels so strongly about it?

… when new people, strange people… became family… and welcomed me to my new home… with warm smiles on their faces and arms wide open 🙂

Yes… it is that month of the year, which engulfs me with all kinds of emotions! Some bad… most good 🙂 And I still cant believe it has been a year already! The date has not yet come.. But, I doubt Ill be able to blog on The Day!! Hence, celebrating the Anniversary month here 🙂 Hence, the theme.. and the header 🙂

Go on… Wish me us 🙂

Its a new day… Its a new world… :) — April 13, 2009

Its a new day… Its a new world… :)

After a sabbatical of nearly 6 months, I am back.. back to work! 🙂

Finding a decent job in today’s market, was like trying to locate a needle in a haystack… only difference here, the needle may not exist at all… even if it did, there were better qualified needle hunters around!!

Fortunately, by divine intervention, an opportunity landed on my door step and I was more than happy to grab it 🙂

After an exhiliarating weekend in Tioman Islands (will write on it soon), I start work again! Today!
