English translation:
[I have always loved reading Hindi novels. This is something that I have inherited from my mother, who used to be a book worm when it came to Hindi novels! But it is extremely difficult to find such novels these days! In those days, mom used to just rent the books from the library and return them back. So, somehow there was never a collection of books! The last Hindi novel I read and loved was Munshi Premchand’s Nirmala. But, after that I never found the resources to be able to read more hindi books! It was only recently that I got such a golden opportunity! Landmark had this huge collection of Hindi books and I ended up buying many of those! 🙂
On the top most of this list was “Gunahon ka Devta” by Dharmvir Bharti. I had heard a lot about this novel from mom, who used to say that if I ever get a hold of this book, I shud definitely read it. So, I did! Just for your information, this novel rates as the top 10 best hindi novels ever written! There was a movie also made on this book, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, but it was never released! This book is like magic! No matter how much you try, you just can not leave it! It is not a thriller, nor an adventurous novel. It is a simple story – of Sudha and Chander! About their love, their sacrifice.. and it is not just a fiction, but the real life story of a research scholar of Allahabad University!
On one side is Chander, on the other side, Sudha! Mr Bharti has depicted these two characters so beautifully that you feel they are revolving around you! You cry with them, you laugh with them and you make all their problems, your own! By the time the book ends, you feel for the characters! and wish certain things would not have happened the way they did!
Anyways, whatever you write about this story is less! Please read it if you understand hindi well 🙂 You wont be disappointed!!
You brought back memories of my Hindi classes. And yes! Nirmala was the last novel I read too, way back in college. Our Hindi lecturer also showed as the film that was made based on the book. There was another book that we had in school, which was also made into a film (Mithun Chakraborthy, Suresh Oberoi and Rakhi), damn, I can’t remember.
Hindi stories were fun. Premchand, Dharamveer Bharathi…I don’t remember most of them.
2 years ago I met my Hindi lecturer at a re-union and he was cribbing about students not attending classes and how Hindi literature is boring for them and dying a slow death.
Wow! How incredible to know someone who reads and appreciates these books as well!! 🙂 To tell you the truth, I am sometimes concerned too. Hindi is actually dying a slow death! Forget about new talent coming up in Hindi writing… people do not even know the names of soooo many good hindi books written once upon a time!
I was once watching this programme on NDTV Hindi.
The anchor travels across the Hindi heartland (the UP-MP-Bihar belt) and it was shocking that Lucknow, which is the hub of Hindi lit, has also failed to deliver in the times of Chetan Bhagat and Dan Brown.
Most writers are surviving by writing C grade thrillers and titiliating novels, the titles of some of these can be seen on channels like Aaj Tak and India TV, you know “Kohooni Nikla Baap” types…?
Sad state of affairs indeed. Tamil and Malayalam are surviving to some extent, thanks to the vernacular media.
If you remember, Premchand himself struggled for 3 years to pay off a loan of meagre 2.50/- in his times.
Countries like Korea amaze me, not many are aware of the word “electronics” and yet they are pioneers in it.
I guess I digressed.
Hail Nova and people like her to continue reading Hindi and vernacular lit. More power to them.
Its rather distressing! I know Tamil and Malayam and maybe even Kannada and Telugu are surviving because of the vernacular media! They are taught in colleges, etc! The language is not lost! And yes, Munshi Premchand lived in abject poverty until much later! He wrote books to earn money! That was the prime motive!
Hail Praveen who have concerns about the language! If we have more people like you, we can save the language from perishing! 😦
I probably never would be comfortable reading a hindi novel… never! For me either it is gujarati or english!
Have you tried reading any? Hindi is not too different from Gujarati 🙂
I know hindi very well… thats not the point. Its just that i cant “feel” when i read in hindi as a upanyaas. Thats all! i don’t know, never liked it 🙂 🙂
Which books have u tried reading in Hindi? M really curious coz I find Hindi writing so full of “ras”, it is difficult to not “feel” it 😐 Also, have you tried reading Shivani? Apparently she used to write in Gujarati as well!
Its been so long that i dont even remember which one i read in hindi… 😦 never felt inclined!! And no i havent read shivani.. shall try. Thanks for the recommendation 🙂 🙂
Uh oh!!! Never mind 🙂 Yes please do 🙂
ok sakhi,bt atlest try,dis novel is fantastic.
ap kya koyi bhi ish ko pad kar esha hi bole ga
Hey … I have read this one (the only hindi novel i have read … thanks to few goood reccos !!!) … Beautifully written …
Indeed beautiful 🙂 🙂
The languages dying a slow death is not only a concern for hindi only… Kannada literature has the highest number of gyan peeths (the kuvempus the Girish karnads).. but its very distressing to see youth not picking up their books and reading.. they bearly know their names.. 😦
😦 Its quite sad, really! 😦 We need a young language author! Why dont u write something? 🙂
I think the regional language dying is a problem of all the regions. Even in gujarat the trend is not to go for the gujarati literature. Though the scenario is a bit better that a few years ago but by and large people think its ” not cool” to read gujarati literature. or its Hip and happening if one speaks and read english or french or other language!! 😦 Sad na!!
Yeah! Quite sad!! Every one shud take up the onus of mastering at least one language other than English!! These days even parents like talking to their children in English!! How desperate!!!!
The worst of the lot is: “tumhe water drink karna hai?” types… Batao!!! 🙄
😆 How difficult it is to teach your child, his/her mother tongue!?? Forget about difficult… people find it shameful if they talk to their kids not in English, but their mother tongue!… 😕
@ Pradeep: At “We the people” discussion, a man said, a UN survey says that all vernacular languages will erode away in 500 years time and it will only be english that would stand tall. I found it rather amusing that languages like Tamil which are as old as 2000 years old could simply vanish. I rather see lot of new languages evolving with a mixture of english. Like how French carries Tamil word “copra” and such…
Your mention of Kannada lit is so true. We need media attention to make everything “cool, hip and happening”. Thats what appeals to people. Resentment towards other languages in Karnataka is what is putting off people from learning the local language, esp Kannada in Blore.
Let us just hope, all of this changes soon!!!
dude.. there r enough of kannada in b’lore.. to make me desperate to learn some common words.. 🙂
Thought I should share this.
Was watching Chetan Bhagat’s interview on NDTV profit last night. Seems, a book store owner in Kanpur told him about this boy who purchased both English and Hindi versions of Five Point Someone. At home, he read Hindi and took English to school so that he can show off he reads English as Hndi is not cool and he will be chided upon.
This is soooo sad!! Suddenly knowing English is the hep thing, thats fine! But why do u have to be ashamed of ur own language?
oh my god… wht d hell.. !!!
Nova dear, its actually on my mind for long now… i would like to send an article which i have written about universal consciousness… let me know… if you can send me your feedback that would be great
Sounds great to me Pradeep! That tells me, its probably time u started a new blog 🙂 I can help you create one, if u wish 🙂
Voww Fantastic… please help me… 🙂 .. i have couple of things on my mind… mail me your number would like to talk to you.. its been almost 2.5 years since i heard your voice….. do you remember when was the last time we had a conversation? I rememeber.. 😀
Haahahaha yes I remember too 🙂 🙂 🙂 Will surely do so 🙂

Hindi media and an unreal discourse
If you haven’t heard of this guy, well, he’s an Indian who had studied in a Gujrathi medium school and went to MIT to do his PhD. Many have rated him as one of the greatest living inventors. What makes him great is that he’s making his work open to all, yeah just like Linux. Simply incredible, considering that he could have made millions or may be billions with such a great invention. Well no words can describe his feat, check out this video and experience the works of the amazing Pranav Mistry.

Hey Praveen… Thanks for sharing this.. I actually happen to know Pranav pretty well… He was my senior in Engineering college 🙂
I read it… And I am quite amazed by it 🙂
Wow! cool you know him?!
Did you watch that TED video?
Yes, I do! 🙂 And yes I saw that Video.. He had sent me the link a few months ago…
🙂
🙂 But, yes… Pranav was always a genius… Even in Engineering college, he was coming up with creative things 🙂
I am sure he must have !!
hope they make more of such people in this country.
I am sure they will…!! India is a land of talent 🙂
We went to India in 2006. I found that every body wants to speak in English. They feel proud of It. Even my sister`s daughter was talking to me in English. I was really surprised.
There is a broader problem here. Indians dont read books, regardless of language. Maybe the literature ‘market’ is a bit better today than before but the point is Indians on average simply dont read a lot.
Like many other problems, the root of this is the education system. Languages were a pain, they were taught in a very non-intuitive and uninteresting way. The teacher had absolutely no freedom. You need some freedom as a teacher to teach any subject and even more so for language and humanities. Unfortunately all they could make us do was stand up before the entire class and read, or memorize paragraphs.
There is the whole angle of ‘English superemacy’ but thats driven partly by economic considerations and partly by the simple fact that as of today, on the whole English literature is superior to that of any Indian language.
1 year back i heard about this book from my friend,so i searched the same everywhere in india whereever i went in those days but nowhere i got this book finaly i got this book from Vadodara raily station,And i am found it worth .

as im grown up in germany, i can understand hindi, punjabi and urdu….but my parents just teached me to read urdu (very little) …
so guys does anyone of u know if it’s possible to get ‘gunahon ka devta’ in english? or any other novel of same standards? and is there an opportunity to order these novels via net?
i wold be really thankful for ur replies and help….
Hey there!! I understand your concern… Unfortunately, I do not know if Gunahon ka Devata was translated in English. Even if it was, I would not have encouraged you to read it as a whole lot of the beauty of the book is the nuances of the language…
Just like translating an urdu sher in English… the meaning may be conveyed but its just not the same 🙂
ya,u r right nova.i am agree with you.that novel has its own beauty which we can not get by translating it in another language.
a serial, named Gunahon ke devta is showing on NDTV Imagine…..I hope inspired from the same book. 🙂
This is really an amazing hindi novel. The best book I have ever read on love story. I have read this so many times and every time I realise I am reading this book first time. So freshnesh of story.
yes,i am agree with you…..”gunahon ka devta” is really awesome novel. you know i read this novel when i was in 7th std and really i was crying at the end of it very badly.since then, even i don’t know how many times i have read this novel.seriously i love this novel.
hi, sorry from an intruder.
i was just googling wid d name of Bhartiji’s dis novel, just came across d first sentence of this post. couldn’t stop to read it whole.
well its really refreshing to see this post, i hardly find people talking abt hindi novels. as per my situation, as a hardcore sales guy, these books work as a stress-buster for me, n i have to rome around whole hyderabad for hindi novels.
“Gunahon ka Devta” i have gone through d whole book more than five times, presented it to more than three persons. its really tough to find such a simple book, specially when it is full of pure feelings n heart-felt emotions.
Thanx!!
ye oh kitab hai jish ko pad kar ap ko sanshar ki oh sachayi dikhe gi jish ko sabdo me baya nahi kiya ja sakta
yeh dunia ki sabse achhi novels me 1 hai. jab ise padhna start karte hain to sudha, chandar aur binny hamare dil k gahraiyon me utar jate hain.aur wo pagal deewana woh na jane kaun sa sandesh suna jata hai. aisa lagta hai novel ka har ek patra hamare aas pass hain, hum unhe apne dil k bahut karib mahsoos karne lagte hain. is novel ko padhker main to bas itna hi hi kah sakta hoon k
MOHABBAT SIRF HASIL KARNE KA NAHO BALKI KHONE KA BHI NAM HAI, ISE CHILLAKER JAHIR KARNE SE BEHTAR KHAMOSH HO KER BHOGA JA SAKTA HAI..

I love reading this book vividly. First time I read this in the year of 1998 and since then in the every summer I made it my hobby to read it. I have read it more than 13 times. In fact I can say ” KI MERE LIYE IS KIATAB KA PADHNA WAISE HI HAI JAISE KI DHARMVEER BHARTI KA LIKHNA” While writing this novel I experienced the feeling one has during depressing moments when he prays ferevently, with full faith…. It appears as if the very same prayer has been ingrained in my heart and I am still repeating it
PRASHANT

Your entry for this novel is highly appreciated. I just finished this weekend. Really I missed this book earlier.
Please share reading list for latecomers.
I also finished “Premashram” of Premchand at the same time and on comparing these two, though the plots are completely different, the language and expression as presented in “Gunahon Ka Devta” is highly advanced and perfected and the words are very simple to understand.
